Your Brain on Piano

Summer has come and gone. The good news is that Winter can fly by just as fast if you find a hobby you enjoy. We all understand the benefits of keeping our body healthy with regular exercise. The same is true for your brain! Don’t let TV and electronics sap all your time. Why not pursue a hobby that is not only enjoyable but has far reaching benefits instead! According to the Royal Conservatory ” music lessons improve language skills, increase emotional resilience, increase empathy, increase attention span and focus, and increase self confidence. They comment that “research shows that participating in music study benefits both brain structure and brain function. Just like well exercised muscles protect the bones and joints, reduce blood pressure and increase energy levels, music education produces bigger, better functioning brains- a benefit to people of any age”.
Hulbert Piano has excellent instructors to study with. Come experience the benefits for yourself of learning an instrument!

Thoughts on taking piano lessons as an adult……

Taking a piano lessons as an adult is a fun and interesting journey. I have waited years for the opportunity and now that I finally jumped in, everything should go smoothly right? After all, I am an adult, so I have learned from experience not to procrastinate, to schedule my time wisely, and understand the need for consistency. Well, several months into my lessons I had one of those weeks. The day of my piano lesson arrived and I hadn’t even looked at my lesson book let alone practiced for even a minute. As I drive to my lesson, negative thoughts race through my mind. What am I doing? Why did I think I could learn the piano with the million other things I need to get done every day? This will never work!

As I greet my instructor, I sheepishly mumble about not having practiced and apologize for the lesson she now has to give to her completely unprepared student. To my relief, she was kind and understanding(Thank you, Jessica!) We cover the same material as the previous week, and I am given the same assignment to work on. However, the lesson still was helpful and enjoyable, and oddly enough I feel a renewed determination not to give up. By the time the day is over, I feel exhausted yet I can’t help but sit down and practice for a few minutes. I am glad to report that I actually practiced every day the following week and wondered why I ever thought I couldn’t do this. When you have a bad week, don’t look back but just keep moving forward.

Piano for adults: 5 reasons to join a group piano class

Piano for adults: 5 reasons to join a group piano class

Piano for adults: 5 reasons to join a group piano class:

1. More Independent Learning
One thing I’ve grown to love about group teaching is how it allows for individual practice and teacher review in a constant cycle. It isn’t just 30 minutes of teacher supervision followed by a week of practice. It’s a few minutes of teacher feedback followed by a chance to experiment individually with the corrections and then a follow-up multiple times throughout the class period.

2. Longer Classes!
Typically a beginning private lesson is 30 minutes long, but our group lessons are structured on a 50-minute university class format. My goal with the class is for you to play 90% of the time and for me to talk 10% of the time. That means you’ll spend a significant amount of time playing piano right in class—regardless of how much outside practice time you achieve. Progress in piano is largely determined by consistency of practicing, and classes offer a significant amount of regular playing time.

3. Economical
Because of the group aspect, classes are more economical than private lessons. They tend to be longer and less expensive than traditional one-on-one lessons. This is true of our group classes.

4. Camaraderie
It’s pure fun! There will be hilarious mistakes, hard-won triumphs, and you as a group can make the journey together.

5. Commitment
We all know you’re more likely to succeed at your workout plan if you join a gym or work out with those almost tribal Crossfitters. Why not apply the principle to learning an instrument as well? When we are all in it together it gives a boost to those resolutions that may not survive all the demands on our time. The biggest hurdle for adult pianists is consistency—the exact nemesis seen at the gym.

Should I enroll my children in Piano Lessons?

Should I enroll my children in Piano Lessons?

Should I enroll my children in Piano Lessons?

As the mother of two kids, I spend months looking forward to summer vacation. I visualize unstructured time with the kids….going to the lake, catching fireflies, making pancakes from scratch, weekly trips to the library to linger, and finding a chapter book to read aloud. However, no sooner do the kids get out of school and the back to school ads come out. I panic- What! I haven’t even hardly begun my list of things I want to do with the summertime and now I have to go school shopping! Yes, summer goes by in a blink. We are now a few short weeks away from the school year ( yes, I did get the school shopping done already) So naturally we all start thinking about structuring the school schedule and trying to decide if and what after school activities they will participate in. The time after school is precious and short. When the kids hit the house, instead of sitting down for a snack and chatting together, I often find myself hurrying them into the car for the next ortho appointment (both kids are in braces). With so many appointments, homework, and everything else essential to fit in like dinner, I have often asked myself, can we let something go? Can we simplify our schedules and reduce our expenses? Is it really necessary for the kids to learn the piano?

Well, there is no getting around the fact that it is very important for kids to learn how to read music and play an instrument. As parents we make time and funds available for necessary activities and appointments that benefit our kids, and making time for piano lessons does them a world of good. The good news is that while giving your child the opportunity to play the piano involves time and expense, it is truly enjoyable to watch your child learn to play and gain confidence at the piano. Below are just a few of the many benefits, but if you spend just a little time researching this you will find mountains of information on the subject.

Benefits of Piano Lessons
  • Reduces stress
  • Encourages hard work and improves concentration
  • Stimulates the brain and improves neural connections
  • Improves posture and strengthens core and hand muscles
  • Improves reading and language skills

So enroll your child today for piano lessons soon. The benefits will last a lifetime and you can be assured that you will not look back and regret having your child learn to play the piano! If you are looking for a qualified teacher, check out our teacher roster on our website.

Walking the path of student and teacher

Walking the path of student and teacher

Walking the path of piano student and piano teacher

As a piano student, I’ve always expected to learn something new from my teacher at each lesson. Little did I know that the lesson goes both ways. Now that I’M the piano teacher with my own students, I realize that I learn just as much, if not more from every individual student. Every pianist of every age has a different way of viewing the music and understanding music theory, so now it is my job to learn, evolve, and change with each new mind that walks in for a lesson. All of my students have broadened my own musical horizon, allowing me to become both a better student and teacher in turn.

Thoughts on taking piano lessons as an adult

Thoughts on taking piano lessons as an adult

Thoughts on taking piano lessons as an adult.

I am a 41 year old mother of two great kids. For years I have been faithfully taking them to their piano lessons, making sure they practice, and attending their recitals. The payoff has been immense. Now instead of hearing them play simple songs they can sit down after dinner and play the most amazing classical pieces and the house is filled with live music. At other times they play more modern pieces such as Billy Joel’s “Piano man”and we all break into song.

Each year I think….one day, one day I will have more time and I will balance my schedule with reading, exercise, and yes a hobby such as playing the piano. A girl can dream, right? I am still waiting for that day when I have more time, but this year I took the plunge. Even though I feel as strapped for time as ever, I started piano lessons. How much time to I devote to it? Not much…only about 10 minutes a day, but in that 10 minutes all the to do lists that run constantly through my mind are forgotten, and it’s just me and the piano! What does it feel like to be plunking out tunes such as ‘Mary had A Little Lamb’ when your husband and kids are playing Beethoven? In a nutshell….amazing! In the few short months I have been taking lessons, I have learned to recognize notes and read music. My fingers are becoming more adept at hitting the keys, and my posture has improved at the piano. I will try to keep you posted on my progress, but if I don’t, it could be because I am too busy playing the piano.
